Nine months after Sarah Winchester's death, John and Mayme Brown welcomed visitors to "The Old Winchester Place" now known as Winchester Park. The park was a success at first, but was soon obvious the amusement park aspect of the Winchester estate could not keep the crowds coming. Locals didn't frequent the carnival rides more than once or twice. And there were no tourists coming by as the house itself had not yet been a featured attraction.
